My work is bound by both the personal and
collective unconscious. Since the pictorial emblems that
resonate with me are indicative of how I experience the
world, it is through the process of building an artwork
that I discover something about myself and my culture. The
dominant influences of my work are personal experience,
historical painting, especially allegory, myth, fiction,
literature, pop culture, and media such as film and television.
My process is varied. An idea can begin with anything such
as a memory, an event, something I see on the internet,
read, or the news. I may use existing imagery or stage photographs
as resource material to construct a painting. Because I
feel my work is most powerful and truthful when the narrative
remains unresolved, I know a work is finished when it defies
any one interpretation. In allowing for multiple readings,
the viewer must determine the meaning for themselves. In
this, the work becomes both about me as well as all of us.
